What to do when you have no idea what you want to do with your life?

So, let me guess: You’re 17, 21, maybe 27—and completely unsure what you want to do with your life. Everyone keeps asking: “So what’s next?” And every time they do, your chest tightens and your brain goes blank.

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re very, very normal.

Here’s the truth: Most people—especially in Gen Z—don’t have it all figured out. And the pressure to know your “one true calling” by your early 20s? It’s outdated, unrealistic and honestly, pretty harmful.

As a coach who works with Gen Z around the world, I want to offer you 5 simple steps you can take right now if you’re feeling directionless, overwhelmed or just plain stuck.

1. Ditch the pressure to find “the one.” There is no one perfect job, career, or path you were meant to follow. That idea keeps you frozen, constantly scanning the horizon for a magic answer. Instead, ask: What’s the next right step that feels curious or meaningful?

Often, direction comes from action—not the other way around.

2. Notice what energises you. Think about moments when you’ve felt even a flicker of excitement, engagement, or pride. Was it helping a friend solve a problem? Creating something? Organising a project? Coaching starts here—mapping your natural strengths and preferences.

Write down 5 things you’ve done recently that didn’t feel like a chore. That’s a fantastic start.

3. Let go of the timeline. One of the biggest sources of stress I hear from clients is feeling "behind." But behind who, exactly? Life is not a race. It’s okay to pause, explore, or change direction. In fact, that’s often where the best growth happens.

You’re not late. You’re learning.

4. Talk it out. Trying to figure everything out in your own head is like being trapped in an echo chamber. Sometimes you need someone outside your life to listen, reflect and help untangle the mess.

That’s why coaching exists—to create space for clarity, self awareness and growth.

5. Get curious, not panicked. Try swapping “What should I do with my life?” for “What would I love to learn more about right now?” or “What problem do I care about?”

Curiosity is lighter than pressure—and a much better guide.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need a next step.

If you’re feeling lost, you don’t have to stay there. I work with young people around the world to find clarity, confidence, and a sense of direction. Would you like help with that?
